A lady in waiting

This morning I had the privilege of conducting the funeral of a wonderful woman who had recently celebrated her 99th birthday. The lady in question had lead a rich and interesting life, having served as a nurse in the Far East just after the war, and it was an absolute honour to be able to share so many colourful and interesting stories from her lifetime during the tribute.

However, there was one story in particular which is perhaps my very favourite one that I've ever had the pleasure of being able to share during a celebration of someone's life. I'm sure the family wouldn't mind me sharing it here...

"For her whole life F had been a strong supporter of the Royal Family, so when her daughter mentioned that the Queen was coming to the opening of the McClellan Gallery, where she was working at the time, F was beside herself with excitement.  On the day of the opening F arrived at the gallery at 9.30 in the morning dressed in her finery despite the fact that the Royal party were not expected until 1pm.

Now, J isn’t quite sure how things transpired but a few hours later she saw her mother walk past in the midst of the Royal party!  Apparently, someone had mistaken F as a Lady in Waiting and she was ushered into the presence of Her Majesty and the Royal party – which, of course, she was absolutely elated about.  There is even a fabulous photo of F standing over the shoulder of the Queen looking very delighted with herself!"

How fabulous is that? There were so many smiles, giggles and laughter as I shared that story this morning. What a wonderful way to celebrate and remember someone who was so very much loved and admired by all those who knew her.
